The rotary kiln equipment for smelting nickel iron from laterite nickel ore is one of the key equipment in the entire laterite nickel smelting process. After drying, the ore enters the rotary kiln. After being heated to 800ºC in the rotary kiln, the surface moisture and crystal water of the ore are removed, and the iron, nickel and cobalt oxides in the ore are partially reduced before entering the electric furnace for smelting.
Product advantages
(1) The main energy source for smelting is coal, rather than expensive coke or electricity.
(2) Free choice of raw materials, various laterite nickel ores in Southeast Asia can be used.
(3) The high-nickel nickel iron produced is of high quality (containing about 20% Ni) and can be directly used as a raw material for the production of stainless steel.
(4) It can also be used as a coolant during molten steel smelting.
Melting methods and processes
The pretreatment step is to grind the raw laterite nickel ore, mix it with carbon-containing materials and flux limestone, and then continuously feed it into the rotary kiln. In the rotary kiln, the hot air flow generated by the combustion of materials and coal moves in countercurrent, undergoing all smelting steps - drying, dehydration, reduction and metal growth. The metal is generated under semi-molten conditions in the kiln. The fired material melt is crushed and ground after it comes out of the rotary kiln, and the reduced nickel-iron alloy is separated from the discharged melt by gravity separation and magnetic separator. The separated nickel-iron is in the form of sand particles with a diameter of 2~3 mm, and carries 1~2% slag. Its chemical composition is C0.1%, Ni18~22%, S0.45%, P0.015%. This product is suitable for steelmaking process regardless of how high the sulfur content is, because it has good desulfurization ability during steelmaking. Sand particles are very conducive to continuous feeding and rapid dissolution of coolant materials in the steelmaking process. The recovery rate of nickel and iron in the rotary kiln production process is very high, both above 90%.
