The slag tank is a device used for loading slag before the steelmaking furnace. It operates in a harsh environment with unpredictable heat exposure and is required to have a high number of uses. The larger the volume of the slag tank is, the more difficult it is to cast.
Slag tank type castings are thin-walled and have extremely high expansion forces, which are prone to quality problems such as runaway fire, cold shuts, sand sticking, and dimensional deviations. Effective measures should be taken for the tooling and process to avoid these problems. The smelting and pouring process adopts cupola smelting, single-package pouring, fast at first and then slow down, and is completed in one pouring.
Structural characteristics
Basic structure: Usually bowl-shaped, with lifting ear shafts on both sides for convenient lifting and transportation.
Material: The traditional material is gray cast iron. In recent years, ductile iron has been widely used. There are also welded slag tanks made of low alloy high-strength steel.
Structural design: Some slag tanks are integrally cast, which has strong anti-deformation ability. Welded slag tanks adopt designs such as an overall grid structure to enhance structural strength and heat dissipation performance.

Design
The slag pots can either be manufactured in accordance with a well-tried and proven concept provided by
the commissioner or be customised to the specific requirements resulting from the operational
environment. The range of the available design reaches from conventional to most advanced buckets.
Slag pots are wearing products exposed to both mechanical and alternate thermal stresses the extent of
them depends on the service conditions. An accurate design aims to minimise the impair of the operative
environment on the service life: however, it remains always a compromise taking into consideration both
physical and economical aspects, resulting in a variety of shapes tailored to the site operations.
A comprehensive data bank resulting from the previous experiences combined with a proper software
implementing the Finite Element Analysis serves the individual design optimisation.
